This dam in the river Rotte first became the site of a small settlement
of fishermen. It quickly grew into a busy trade hub, and location of
several harbours. In 1340, Rotterdam was officially acknowledged as a
city, and canals were dug and town ramparts were built.
Who could have
imagined then that this village would grow into a metropolis with
Europe’s largest port? In 2005 the city has hosted its first Red Bull Airrace and the city almost crumpled under the enormous crowds who gathered. This year, you too can withness this incredible event...its coming again on the 19th and 20th of July!
In subsequent centuries trade and shipping flourished, firing up the
strong growth of the city. New harbours were dug at the end of the 16th
century in the area that we now know as Rotterdam on the Maas. Over the
years, Rotterdam has acquired an image of a city of hard workers, and
developed into a model of modernity with its spacious layout and
varying architectural styles. The port was further expanded with
numerous harbours, which have made this metropolis one of the largest
ports in the world. An imposing city, with a string of skyscrapers and
a modern feel, and that is also an important cultural and arts hub.
Against the backdrop of the impressive skyline, with the Euromast and
the stunning Erasmus Bridge as the main landmarks, the world’s best
pilots will do battle in the Red Bull World Series 2008.
